Mission

Lyryx strives to advance education by developing online software solutions that are beneficial to learning and teaching in today's society.

Corporate Goal

Lyryx Learning's goal is to be recognized for leadership in the design and development of online learning and assessment solutions.

The Lyryx Story

In 1997 Claude Laflamme and Keith Nicholson, both professors in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Calgary recognized that technology had sufficiently evolved to enable higher pedagogical quality learning and assessment products than the widely available multiple choice style products. They recognized that technology could be harnessed to handle the nuances of the sophisticated grading of student responses, thereby providing rich and personalized feedback to the student. This guidance could be of real value in helping students learn the course material.

Professors Laflamme and Nicholson built a team led by Bruce Bauslaugh and Rich Cannings that developed the source code that lies at the heart of the Lyryx platform. Beginning with the textbook 'Elementary Linear Algebra,' authored by Professor Nicholson and published by McGraw-Hill Ryerson, the first Lyryx product was created and tested in the late nineties with the support of the University of Calgary and seed funding by the Province of Alberta. Lyryx Learning was established in 2000, and with the support of a group of private investors, expanded its scope and began offering products at colleges and universities across Canada. Since then, the Lyryx team has developed more than 85 products to accompany McGraw-Hill Ryerson and other texts for courses in business and mathematics. Working together with McGraw-Hill Ryerson, the Lyryx solutions have set a standard for online learning and assessment solutions in Canada.

Today, Lyryx Learning Inc. is a privately held company with headquarters in Calgary, Alberta and an American office in San Carlos, California. Approximately 100,000 students per year in Canada alone use Lyryx products.

In 2009, Lyryx established a strategic partnership with Flat World Knowledge, a new entrant in the field of developing and distributing high-quality, openly-licensed, and affordable learning resources for the post-secondary education market, including free online texts and offering choices to students. It is through this partnership that Lyryx is entering the U.S. market.

Learning and Assessment Solutions

Lyryx has focused on developing high pedagogical quality products - in short, we have endeavoured to incorporate proven techniques and insights into the design of our solutions through technological means.

We at Lyryx strive to use online technology to help students learn and teachers teach, and provide all the necessary support to facilitate these objectives. That is accomplished by designing intuitive software that provides meaningful guidance to learners. At the core of a course of study are assessment measures that give students a detailed profile of their level of understanding and provides instructors data on student performance. Assessment and learning are two wheels on the same axle - forward progress depends upon common velocity. This is why we describe our products as learning and assessment solutions.
